Hay insights for growers
1 min read

COMMON agronomy challenges for hay growers were on the agenda at an information evening hosted by ThriveAgri and Hay Australia at Paskeville last week.

Drawing on his 20 years of experience working with export hay producers, Nutrien Ag Solutions agronomist Greg Toomey gave an overview of the successes and challenges of producing quality oaten hay with a focus on rotations, nitrogen, weed management and gross margins.

About 20 guests from Yorke Peninsula and the Mid North participated in the event.

ThriveAgri general manager Charlie Brown, national grower relationship and quality assurance manager Geoff Walker and trading and risk manager Rob Ford also spoke at the event.

Mr Brown outlined the process growers need to follow for supplying hay by contract and receivals to ensure they meet the criteria for export, plus insights into the expectations of export customers when the hay arrives at its destination.

Mr Walker said the event focused on sharing practical industry knowledge to help growers prepare for the 2023 hay season.

During the past two years, Hay Australia has expanded its operations with the acquisition of the hay processing plant at Paskeville, formerly operated by SP Hay, as well as sites in Western Australia and Victoria.
