Leaf a lasting legacy with Trees for Life
2 min read

WITH bushland all over the country being cleared, Trees For Life are calling for Yorke Peninsula residents to take the lead in creating a better future for our peninsula.

The clearing of vegetation has left native bushland across the region fragmented, but some local landholders have stepped up for the environment by improving biodiversity while simultaneously enhancing their own properties.

Southern YP landholder Pam Bennett has dedicated her life to restoring and protecting bushland and has had great success in creating a robust native haven on her property in Hillocks Drive.

Ms Bennett said she took tiny steps but made significant progress by planting, weeding and keeping the feral animals away.

“When I first started, I would look over the dunes full of boxthorn and think, I can’t do this,” Ms Bennett said.

“But I would tell myself I’d just do a bit at a time, and it’s amazing what you can do — a bit at a time. Small changes can have big impacts.”

These small changes have resulted in many native plants and animals returning to Hillocks Drive — just from restoring small patches at a time.

“It’s about me as much as it is about the bush. I know it makes me healthier, it keeps my mind and body strong,” she said.

“I also think we all have a responsibility to look after this planet and we all need to do our part.”

Trees For Life has played a crucial role in the restoration and protection of our natural areas to help establish more resilient ecosystems, and would like to applaud the many landholders who are continuing to invest in their properties.

“As we continue to face uncertain conditions, we can still move forward by taking smaller and slower steps,” a Trees For Life spokesperson said.

“These steps still act as a buffer against many impacts and help to strike a balance between living on the land and helping the land live.”

Whether you’re continuing your journey or just getting started, we are here to help.
